The House Museum, 2005 - 2015.
The House Museum was a site-specific project that included the contents and exterior of a house in Western Newfoundland. Over the course of its ten-year lifespan, THM hosted installations, performances and community events, all exploring how culture and tourism intersect. THM was specifically concerned with how a culture of hospitality transforms that hospitality into a commodity to sell to tourists.
Every aspect of the house was used to provoke questions among tourists and locals alike, with the main question being, "Why are you here?" Unlike most museums, THM asked its visitors to be more than passive consumers, often flipping the roles of tourist and local. It was run as a tourist attraction during the summer months. Each year, THM invited locals to create installations in the house and asked tourists also to contribute. Everything was offered for free, including tea and a snack.
For me, it also blurred the lines between making art and living life as THM was my home with my two children even when it was an art project/tourist attraction.
