Avenue of Trees, 2011.
Avenue of Trees was a site-specific installation of handknit and crocheted squares installed along a five-km length of roadway leading into the city of Cheongju, South Korea, as part of the 2011 Cheongju Biennale.
I was invited to create a new project that would guide visitors to the arts centre which housed the Biennale. Together with help from handworkers in the US, Canada and South Korea, we made over 400 squares. These squares were placed on Sycamore trees that spanned the length of the main road into the city. The project had a rhythmic effect as the colours danced past the windows of the speeding cars.
Remarkably, none of the squares were vandalised or stolen during the course of the Biennale.
